Weight Loss and Longevity for Black Women: What the Research Says

Black women carry a higher burden of obesity and often have longer menopause symptoms, according to CDC and NIH-funded research. Provider-guided GLP-1 care, menopause care and steady habits can support more healthy years, and results vary.

For Black women, longevity is closely tied to weight and metabolic health and to how the menopause transition is handled. CDC data show that non-Hispanic Black women had the highest obesity prevalence of any group in 2017 to 2018, and the NIH-funded SWAN study found that Black women had the longest-lasting hot flashes and night sweats. Provider-guided weight care, real help through menopause and steady daily habits can all support more healthy years, though no single treatment promises a result.

Key takeaways

  • In CDC data for 2017 to 2018, 56.9% of non-Hispanic Black women had obesity, the highest of any group measured.
  • Across all US women, obesity prevalence was 41.3% in August 2021 to August 2023, and severe obesity was higher in women than in men.
  • In SWAN, African American women reported the longest duration of hot flashes and night sweats, about 10 years at the median.
  • GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are prescription options for adults who meet weight criteria, alongside nutrition, movement and sleep.
  • Menopause hormone therapy is an option for many healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause, after a provider review.

Why weight matters for healthy years

Weight on its own is not a measure of worth or health, but carrying extra weight raises the risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, joint pain, sleep apnea and heart disease, the conditions that most often cut healthy years short. That is why weight care is part of a longevity plan.

The numbers show why this matters in Detroit and in Black communities across the country. In the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2017 to 2018, the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity was 56.9% among non-Hispanic Black women, compared with 39.8% among non-Hispanic white women and 43.7% among Hispanic women. The most recent CDC brief, covering August 2021 to August 2023, reported obesity in 41.3% of US women overall, with severe obesity higher in women than in men in every age group.

These differences reflect many forces, including access to care, food environments, stress, sleep and genetics. They are not a matter of willpower, and they deserve real medical options.

What GLP-1 medicines offer

GLP-1 medicines lower appetite and help you feel full sooner. NIDDK describes them as prescription options for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or prediabetes.

Large trials of the brand-name medicines found meaningful average weight loss when the medicine was combined with diet and physical activity. The STEP 1 trial studied once-weekly semaglutide, and the SURMOUNT-1 trial studied once-weekly tirzepatide. Both enrolled Black participants, though in smaller numbers than white participants, which is one reason researchers continue to call for more diverse trials.

Golden Glow offers compounded semaglutide for $205 a month and compounded tirzepatide for $330 a month, at every dose, after a licensed provider review. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved and were not the products studied in those trials, and results vary.

The menopause transition lasts longer for many Black women

The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) followed women of several backgrounds through the menopause transition. In a 2015 analysis, African American women reported the longest total duration of hot flashes and night sweats of any group, about 10 years at the median.

Night sweats and broken sleep affect energy, mood, appetite and weight, and many women say they were told to wait it out. The Menopause Society's 2022 position statement says that for healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of hormone therapy for symptoms generally outweigh the risks. A licensed provider can review your history and discuss hormone and non-hormone options.

A longevity plan that fits real life

Medicine works best on top of the foundations. A practical plan often includes:

  1. Know your numbers. Ask your primary care clinician about blood pressure, A1C, cholesterol and the cancer screenings recommended for your age.
  2. Protect muscle. Strength training two or more days a week and enough protein matter even more when you are losing weight.
  3. Guard your sleep. Treat night sweats and snoring, which can point to sleep apnea.
  4. Use the right tools. Our BMI calculator and perimenopause symptom checklist can help you prepare for a visit.
  5. Get provider-guided care. A licensed provider can review GLP-1 options and menopause care in the same plan.

What about glow and healthy-aging programs?

Programs like GLOW and KLOW peptides, GHK-Cu cream, NAD+, sermorelin and MOTS-c are studied for skin, energy and healthy aging, but evidence in people is limited for most of them. They can be part of a plan you choose with your provider, not a replacement for the basics above.

Frequently asked questions

Are GLP-1 medicines safe for Black women?

GLP-1 trials included Black participants, and safety depends on your own history rather than your race. They are not for use during pregnancy or for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. A licensed provider reviews your history first.

How much does weight loss care cost at Golden Glow?

Compounded semaglutide is $205 a month or $420 a quarter, and compounded tirzepatide is $330 a month or $795 a quarter. Prices include the online visit, provider review, medication, supplies and shipping.

Can I get care in Detroit without visiting an office?

Yes. Women in Detroit and across Michigan complete an online visit from home, and if a treatment is prescribed, a licensed US pharmacy ships it to your door.

Does menopause make weight loss harder?

Many women notice weight and shape changes during the menopause transition, along with poorer sleep. A provider can look at weight care and menopause symptoms together.
